Tips for Unique Accents

How can you give your house a unique feel? Through unique accents, of course.

Decorative Accent Pieces
Plates can be used as a decorative element for the living room, kitchen, or dining room. A small display place just for them, especially when they have elements that go with the whole room, will have a wonderful effect. They can also be displayed in beautiful decorative holders that hang on your wall.

You can use a beautiful porcelain bowl as a centerpiece on a small table

Place a plant in a beautiful plant holder, porcelain pottery, or a basket to bring a bit of nature indoors.

A unique chair or a small accent table or cabinet can improve the ambiance in living rooms or bedrooms.

Artwork with distinctive motifs, fitting the style of other elements in the room can go a long way in making a room inviting.

Five Easy Tricks for Handling Problem Rooms

Do you have a room that just seems to defy decorating solutions? One that’s too long? Too narrow? Too tall? You can solve that problem space dilemna with a few visual tricks!

1. Is your room too long? Divide it! Create two or more separate groupings in the room. Have an area for conversation, one for music, or one for media viewing. The possibilities are endless! Use area rugs to define each space and tie the whole design together. Dark colors on the short walls at either end of the long space will make them appear to advance and shorten the space visually.

2. Is your room too narrow? Arrange your furniture on the diagonal to fool the eye! Linear elements such as art, shelves or rugs should be placed on the short wall to add visual width. Painting the longest walls a cool color which will make them appear to recede can trick the eye and visually widen the space.

3. Is your ceiling too low? Add height to your room with tall, vertical elements, such as bookcases. Long curtains which drape on the floor can also add visual height, as will tall lamps or torchieres. Painting the ceiling a light, cool color (which appears to recede) will make the room seem brighter and more open.

4. If your room too tall? Lower the ceiling by incorporating more horizontal lines in the room. Shelves, art and crown moldings are just a few of the elements that can lower the height of the room. Another way to lower the room is to install molding or chair rails one half to three quarters of the way up the walls. This trick visually shortens the room. Painting the ceiling a dark, warm color will also shorten the visual space.

5. Is your room too big? Divide it into more intimate areas! Grouping a couple of chairs with a loveseat, two chairs and a small table, a sofa and chair, or other similar arrangements will make the room seem cozy. Warm colors advance visually, so painting the room a warm color will make the room seem more intimate.

How to arrange Furniture for your Home Décor

Every home has its problems and challenges in buying and arranging furniture. Some rooms are too long and seem like a bowling alley. Others are too narrow, or too low, too tall or too wide. Yet each of these problems can be solved with the correct furniture arrangement. The correct grouping can overcome awkward placement and make the room seem more visually balanced. To correct the look of your imperfect room, try:

  • If your room is too long.. Divide the space into two separate, but balanced smaller groupings of furniture, like a loveseat and two chairs. An area rug beneath each grouping can serve to unite the area visually. The conversation areas formed will make guests feel welcome.
  • If your room is too narrow. When your room is too narrow, place furniture (especially your sofa) on the diagonal between two walls to fit more furniture comfortably into the room.
  • If your room seems too low. If the ceiling of your room feels too low, make it seem taller by adding tall furniture such as armoires, that draw the eye upward. Use vertical lines like stripes or graphic paint elements.
  • If your room seems too high. If the ceiling of your room feels too high, add more strong horizontal lines in the furniture. Molding 1/2 to 3/4 of the way up the wall can make the room seem lower. Pictures placed lower on the wall can make the room seem less cavernous as well.

Tip of the day:

Not all home decorating ideas require a heavy investment of time and money.

Home Decorating Ideas

1. Rearrange The Furniture- Pull your furniture away from the walls. Try positioning it at intriguing angles. For example, a sofa arranged diagonally across a narrow living room will make the room look wider.

2. Paint A Wall- Paint one wall your favorite color and make it the focal point. Hang interesting art on that wall and move a nice piece of furniture there. (Note: Make sure that the color is one that is shared with several other objects and fabrics in the room.)

3. Bring In Plants- Greenery always adds a breath of fresh air to a room. If you don’t have a green thumb, try silk plants and trees. The quality has gotten so good that its hard to distinguish them from the real thing.

Inexpensive  Decorating Ideas
1. Use a taller pumpkin as a vase for fresh flowers. Clean out the guts and seeds and use the pumpkin to arrange your flowers. Taller ones work well, but so will squatty pumpkins if you cut your flower stems short.

2. Make topiary out of a foam form (conical shapes always work well) and hot glue a variety of large seeds – acorns, walnuts, pinecones – to the form. Completely cover the foam. Easy and makes a wonderful piece for any table or countertop.

3. Pick brightly colored fallen leaves. Rub a good moisturizer onto the front and back of the leaves and let dry. This helps the leaves keep their color and avoid curling. Once dry, scatter the leaves on a table, around a centerpiece, or on a fireplace mantle.
