An explosion of materials

The story of how Formica could be multiplied to infinity given the huge and growing number of materials, seminaufacturated products and material related technologies around today. The latter half of the century saw explosive growth in innovation as regards classical materials (complex glass, new metal alloys, wood derivates and so on) and, more particularly, as regard the creation of composite materials, the incredible success story of polymers, the recent emergence of so called intelligent materials, nano- technologies, bio-materials- the list is endless. Manufacturers experiment with specific materials to solve specific problems: materials for a product that must be impermeable to water but not to certain gases, for a product that has to withstand high temperatures without losing rigidity or electrical insulation properties, for a product designed to deflect specific wavelengths of light at a specific angle, to be printable one one side or to resist UV light. Research and development laboratories are designing materials apparently originating in the realms of fantasy, and hundreds of new possibilities surface every day. Only a few will find relevant applications if their existence is not made known to a wide audience, however. After all , Formica could have remained the sole preserve of electrical insulation had it not been for its chance encounter with the world of furniture.
